Rainfall Alerts Issued for Six Northern States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rainfall alerts for six northern states, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand. Orange and yellow alerts are in effect as the region experiences intense monsoon activity this August.
Monsoon Conditions and Expected Relief
Strong monsoon currents, influenced by a Bay of Bengal weather system, are causing the severe conditions. Some relief is expected after September 2. Many states are grappling with excess rainfall, cloudbursts, landslides, and flooding, prompting authorities to maintain high alert levels.
Himachal Pradesh Experiences High Rainfall
In Himachal Pradesh, IMD officials in Shimla reported widespread rainfall, with Sirmaur district recording approximately 140 mm—the highest in the state in the past 24 hours. The state has already seen 67% excess rainfall this August, marking a 15-year high. Orange alerts are in place for Una, Mandi, Kangra, and Sirmaur until August 31.
Punjab and Haryana Under Close Watch
Punjab and Haryana are also under close watch. IMD Chandigarh forecasts heavy rain over the next three to four days, with low-lying areas at risk of further inundation. Orange alerts have been issued for parts of these states starting Saturday.
Delhi Airport Issues Advisory
Delhi Airport authorities have advised passengers to stay updated with their airlines due to an orange alert in the capital. While flight operations are currently normal, travelers should anticipate potential delays. Moderate rainfall is expected in several parts of the city.
Jammu & Kashmir Recovery Efforts
In Jammu & Kashmir, water levels in rivers have receded, but rescue and relief efforts continue following severe flooding. The Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage remains suspended, and landslides have blocked the Jammu-Srinagar highway, disrupting rail services and leading to the cancellation of over 40 trains.
Uttarakhand Faces Fresh Challenges
Uttarakhand is facing fresh challenges with cloudbursts in Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts, trapping families and impacting livestock. Officials have confirmed missing persons and widespread road blockages. Residents near riverbanks are urged to evacuate, as the Alaknanda River approaches danger levels.
