Florida’s Hurricane-Damaged Gem Gets a Makeover
Published Jul 27, 2025
Flagler Beach Pier in Florida is undergoing a major rebuild after hurricane damage forced its closure in 2022. Originally built in 1928, the new, taller concrete pier will improve durability, accessibility, and storm resilience. It will feature breakaway panels, shaded areas, and turtle-friendly design. Construction aims to finish by late 2026, barring major coastal storms or hurricanes.
Rebuilding the pier after hurricane damage
Flagler Beach Pier, a beloved landmark in north-central Florida, is undergoing a significant reconstruction following severe damage from Hurricanes Matthew, Ian, and Nicole. Originally constructed in 1928, the pier has been a fixture of the coastline for nearly a century, but recent storms rendered it unsafe, leading to its closure in 2022.
Concrete supports and taller pier for resilience
Construction crews are currently dismantling the damaged sections to pave the way for a modernized, storm-resistant structure. The redesigned pier will stand approximately 10 feet taller than its predecessor and will feature concrete supports instead of wood, greatly enhancing its ability to withstand future storms. Upon completion, the pier will reach an elevation of 28 feet, making it one of Florida’s tallest fishing piers, surpassing those in Pensacola, Panama City, and Jacksonville.
ADA features, shaded areas, turtle considerations
The reconstruction project emphasizes not only durability but also accessibility and environmental responsibility. The design incorporates ADA-accessible features, shaded areas, and considerations for sea turtle nesting. A crucial addition is the use of timber breakaway deck panels, engineered to detach under extreme wave conditions, minimizing widespread structural damage during major storm events.
Updated design improves pier's resilience
Historical data shows that hurricanes in this region can generate waves exceeding 15 to 20 feet, as seen during Hurricane Matthew in 2016. While no structure can be entirely immune to all potential future storms, the updated design of the new Flagler Beach Pier significantly improves its resilience.
Aiming to minimize local disruptions
City officials have released renderings illustrating the blend of practical upgrades and aesthetic enhancements planned for the pier. The project also aims to minimize disruptions to local businesses and residents during the construction phase, with an anticipated completion date set for the end of 2026. However, this timeline remains subject to change, depending on future weather events such as hurricanes or nor’easters.
Securing the pier's future for decades
With an estimated cost of $14 million, the project is being funded through a combination of state and federal support. The new construction is designed to last for decades, securing the pier's future as a resilient, enduring landmark on the Florida coastline, and preserving its significance as a community hub and tourism magnet, weather permitting.
