Cabo Verde hurricanes, which originate near the West African islands in August and September, are known as some of the Atlantic's strongest storms. Despite their strength, they seldom make landfall on the U.S. mainland. Since 1995, only nine out of 235 hurricanes have directly impacted the United States, though these few caused significant destruction.
