Frost tends to favor low-lying areas due to cold air drainage. As the sun sets, the ground cools through radiation cooling. Air in contact with the ground loses heat, becoming denser. This cold, dense air flows downhill and accumulates in valleys and basins, called frost hollows, dropping temperatures and forming frost.
