Tropical waves are atmospheric disturbances that can evolve into hurricanes. Originating over Africa, they travel westward across the Atlantic. While not all become hurricanes, they often serve as the initial phase. Given the right conditions, a tropical wave can intensify into a tropical cyclone, potentially becoming a hurricane with sustained winds of 74 mph or greater.
