Emergency barriers successfully contain glacial outburst flood
In Juneau, Alaska, a recent glacial outburst flood was successfully contained thanks to newly installed emergency barriers. These barriers redirected floodwaters away from residential areas, mitigating what could have been a devastating event. The flood, intensified by the effects of climate change, saw the Mendenhall River reach a record depth of 16.65 feet on August 13 before receding to 8.75 feet by late afternoon. City officials declared the situation under control around 4 p.m., allowing evacuated residents to return home with a caution to remain vigilant.
