Juneau in state of emergency due to floods
Juneau, Alaska is facing a state of emergency as glacial floods from Suicide Basin threaten the city. Evacuations are underway as the Mendenhall River surges, impacting nearby communities. Authorities issued warnings of intensified flooding along Mendenhall Lake and River from late Tuesday through Wednesday, prompting residents within the 17-foot inundation zone to evacuate. A Red Cross shelter is available at Floyd Dryden Gymnasium for evacuees. Several facilities near the river, including the Mendenhall Valley Public Library and Diamond Park Aquatic Center, are closed. Mendenhall Loop Road remains closed until water levels drop below 12 feet and structural inspections are completed.
