Big Wind Maker? Derecho May Hit the Northern Plains
Published Jul 28, 2025
A derecho is likely today across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with severe storms expected from eastern South Dakota into southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. Damaging winds over 75 mph, hail, and embedded tornadoes are possible. Flash flooding may occur due to high rainfall rates on saturated ground. A moderate risk for severe weather is in effect.
Severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, and flash flooding
A powerful weather phenomenon known as a derecho may impact the Northern Plains, bringing with it the potential for severe thunderstorms, damaging wind gusts, and flash flooding. According to the Storm Prediction Center, thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon, coalescing into a derecho by early this evening over eastern South Dakota. This intense storm system is then forecast to move east-southeastward, affecting parts of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.
High winds and possible tornadoes expected
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a moderate risk (level 4/5) of severe thunderstorms for portions of eastern South Dakota into southwestern Minnesota. Residents in these areas should be prepared for several wind gusts exceeding 75 mph, the possibility of line-embedded tornadoes, and instances of severe hail. Derechos are characterized by widespread, long-lived windstorms associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms.
Flash flooding possible in Northern Plains
In addition to the severe wind and hail threat, there is also a significant risk of heavy rainfall. High rain rates over already saturated soils could lead to scattered to isolated instances of flash flooding across the Northern Plains and into the Upper Midwest. A slight risk (at least a 15% chance) of excessive rainfall is in effect for parts of eastern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, and northern Iowa.
Heed warnings and secure outdoor objects
Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and heed any warnings issued by local authorities. Secure outdoor objects, and be prepared to seek shelter if severe weather approaches. Flash flooding can occur rapidly, so avoid driving through flooded areas and be aware of rising water levels. Stay safe during this potentially dangerous weather event.
