The study combines sea level rise with vertical land motion, revealing increased flooding risks and heightened impacts from extreme weather events in San Francisco.
Underestimations of vertical land motion, also noted in Los Angeles, emphasize the urgent need for proactive measures to protect coastal communities.
NASA data shows accelerated sinking in San Francisco
San Francisco is confronting an escalating crisis as new NASA data reveals the city is sinking at a rate faster than previously calculated. This accelerated sinking, combined with rising sea levels, could result in sea levels being twice as high as earlier projections by 2050. The study highlights that previous calculations, which relied on indirect measurements from tide gauges, underestimated the extent of vertical land motion, the process by which land sinks. The new research utilizes satellite imagery from 2015 to 2023 to provide a more accurate assessment, revealing a significantly increased risk of flooding and greater vulnerability to extreme weather events.
