This breathtaking event was caused by a significant geomagnetic storm, which itself was the result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) emanating from the sun. These CMEs send charged particles hurtling towards Earth, and when they interact with the gases in our atmosphere, they create the vibrant and dynamic colors that characterize the aurora.
