Severe solar storms trigger GPS disruption alerts
A series of severe solar storms have triggered alerts for potential disruptions in GPS systems across the United States and Canada. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), a rare G4 severe geomagnetic storm watch was issued on November 11, 2025, following several coronal mass ejections (CME) and a significant X5.1 solar flare. These solar events can cause impulsive disruptions lasting from minutes to hours, affecting high-frequency radio signals and satellite navigation systems. Farmers in both countries have been warned about possible degradation or inoperability of GPS equipment, which is crucial for agricultural operations. The November flare was noted as the strongest of 2025, causing radio blackouts across Africa and Europe, and was the most intense since October 2024.
