Two Arctic Blasts Loom as Polar Vortex Stretches in January
US · Published Jan 18, 2026
The polar vortex is expected to send two waves of Arctic air into the U.S. in late January, potentially causing intense cold outbreaks.
The first cold surge is anticipated around January 17, with a more severe blast following a week later.
Temperatures in cities like Chicago and New York City could drop significantly below normal as the Arctic air settles in.
Two waves of Arctic air predicted
Meteorologists are predicting that the polar vortex is set to unleash two significant waves of Arctic air from Canada into the United States later this month, increasing the likelihood of intense cold outbreaks across much of the country. The first surge of cold air is expected around the weekend of January 17, followed by a more powerful and potentially extreme blast approximately a week later. AEM climatologist Judah Cohen has described the upcoming pattern as a two-stage event, noting that the second round could be more severe.
