Polar Vortex Brings Cold Waves, Snow Threats to Central & Eastern U.S.
US · Published Jan 14, 2026
The polar vortex is strengthening, bringing colder air to the central and eastern U.S. with below-average temperatures expected through early February.
Midwest and Northeast cities may experience snow squalls and lake-effect snow due to the southward dip of the jet stream.
Potential shifts in the polar vortex could bring some of the coldest air of the winter, requiring preparedness for extreme cold.
Colder air returns as polar vortex intensifies
The central and eastern United States are bracing for a return of colder air as the polar vortex intensifies, ushering in below-average temperatures that are expected to persist from late January into early February. The strengthening polar vortex will cause the jet stream to dip southward over the Great Lakes region. This dip will result in repeated blasts of cold air pushing southward, while simultaneously weakening storm systems along the Atlantic coast.
