Oklahoma fire spreads rapidly into southern Kansas
The Ranger Road Fire, which started in Oklahoma on February 17, has quickly spread into southern Kansas, engulfing over 283,000 acres by February 19. Containment efforts are proving difficult, with only 15% of the fire under control. Extremely critical fire weather conditions, including dry air, consistent winds reaching 20 mph, and plentiful dry vegetation, are fueling the rapid spread. Images captured by NASA's VIIRS instrument on the NOAA-20 satellite illustrate the fire's extensive impact and the challenges faced in controlling it.
