Record Heat Continues Across Western U.S., Expands Eastward
US · Published Mar 24, 2026
Record-breaking heat is sweeping across the Western U.S. and expanding eastward, with numerous states breaking March high temperature records.
A strong heat dome, influenced by weakened jet stream winds and unusual polar vortex behavior, is driving the extreme temperatures.
Climate change is likely intensifying the heatwave, leading to concerns about public health and infrastructure strain. Residents are advised to take precautions.
Record-breaking temperatures impact 14 states this March
A significant heatwave is currently impacting the Western United States and spreading eastward, resulting in unprecedented temperatures and numerous broken records for March highs across at least 14 states. Arizona has been particularly affected, with temperatures reaching a record-breaking 110°F (43°C), quickly followed by 112°F (44°C) in both Arizona and California. Forecasters anticipate that approximately 540 additional high-temperature records could be tied or broken across 28 states this week.
