Wildfire in Florida affects preserve and communities
A significant wildfire, named the "National fire," has been raging in Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida, since February 22, 2026. Located approximately 25 miles east of Naples, the fire has rapidly spread through dry vegetation, creating a substantial plume of smoke that is affecting the preserve and surrounding communities. NASA's Aqua satellite captured images on February 25, revealing that the fire had already consumed around 24,000 acres. Shifting winds have pushed the smoke northward, leading to reduced visibility and the temporary closure of Interstate 75, also known as "Alligator Alley."
