Ripple migrates south, spotted near New Orleans
A white shark named Ripple, recently tagged by OCEARCH, has been spotted off the coast of New Orleans after migrating south for winter. Ripple, an 11-foot, 778-pound sub-adult male, was tagged on Sept. 30 off Nova Scotia and tracked moving past Cape Hatteras, around Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico. Scientists use tracking data to study shark migration and ocean ecosystems. Because Ripple was tagged at the start of fall migration, researchers are still unsure where he typically spends his winters.
