Global Climate Emergency as Earth's Energy Imbalance Hits Record High
US · Published Mar 23, 2026
Earth's energy imbalance has increased significantly, leading to record ocean warming and extreme weather.
Human activities, especially burning fossil fuels, are the main cause of the escalating energy imbalance and greenhouse gas emissions.
Consequences include rising sea levels, more frequent heatwaves, and increased storm severity, requiring urgent global action.
Earth faces severe climate emergency, energy imbalance
The Earth is currently grappling with a severe climate emergency, characterized by an unprecedented energy imbalance that is fueling ocean warming and exacerbating extreme weather conditions. The World Meteorological Organization's latest report highlights a concerning surge in the planet's energy imbalance, increasing by approximately 11 zettajoules annually between 2005 and 2025. This imbalance, primarily caused by the absorption of excess heat by the oceans, has led to record-high ocean heat content, posing a grave threat to marine ecosystems and contributing to rising sea levels.
