PTSD symptoms worsen for veterans in winter
Veterans experiencing PTSD may find their symptoms worsening during the winter months due to reduced daylight and colder temperatures. According to Military.com, the lack of sunlight can disrupt circadian rhythms and decrease serotonin production, exacerbating PTSD symptoms such as nightmares, anxiety, and avoidance behaviors. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects about 5% of the general population, but veterans with PTSD face compounded challenges. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers treatments like light therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy to help manage these symptoms. Light therapy involves using a light box that emits 10,000 lux of bright light, significantly brighter than typical indoor lighting, to help regulate mood and sleep patterns.
