Severe winter impacts Great Lakes shipping activities
The Great Lakes region is grappling with an early and severe winter, severely impacting shipping activities. In response, the U.S. Coast Guard has launched its second icebreaking operation, "Operation Coal Shovel," commencing from the Detroit area on January 2, 2026. This initiative seeks to maintain navigable channels from the southern part of Lake Huron, through the St. Clair-Detroit River, and into Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
