Hawaii is experiencing its worst flooding in 20 years due to back-to-back kona storms.
Evacuation orders are in place for Haleiwa and Waialua due to imminent road failures and the risk of Wahiawa dam collapse.
Damage estimates could reach $1 billion, affecting homes, roads, and critical infrastructure across the islands.
Hawaii faces worst flooding in two decades
Hawaii is grappling with its most devastating flooding in two decades, caused by a series of kona storms. These winter cyclones have unleashed torrential rainfall, particularly affecting the leeward sides of the islands. On March 20, areas east of Waialua experienced severe flooding, with roads submerged under a foot of water, necessitating emergency rescues. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency has issued mandatory evacuation orders for Haleiwa and Waialua, warning of imminent road failures. The Wahiawa dam, built in 1906, is at risk of collapse, prompting further evacuations.
