Critical fire weather conditions in central US
The National Weather Service has issued red flag and high wind warnings for a large area of the central United States, from the Canadian border through states like Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. These warnings emphasize the increased risk of wildfires due to strong winds and extremely dry conditions. In southern South Dakota and northern Nebraska, winds are expected to be sustained at 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph. Western Colorado and eastern Kansas may experience even stronger winds, sustained at 35 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph. These high winds, combined with low relative humidity expected to drop to around 13% in the southern Plains, create critical fire weather conditions.
