Solar Storm May Bring Northern Lights to 18 States
US · Published Mar 19, 2026
A solar storm may cause the Northern Lights to be visible in 18 U.S. states.
Optimal viewing times are after sunset to early morning (10 PM - 2 AM), with a clear northern horizon.
Visibility depends on storm strength and local weather conditions; auroras could extend farther south if activity intensifies.
Aurora borealis visible in wider range locations
A solar storm is expected to bring the mesmerizing northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, to a wider range of locations than usual. A series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) could trigger a moderate to strong geomagnetic storm (G2–G3), potentially making the auroras visible across 18 U.S. states from late March 19 into early March 20, with activity possibly continuing through March 21. This celestial event offers a rare opportunity for many to witness one of nature's most stunning displays.
