Rare Snow Eyes the Southeast as Arctic Air Slips South
US · Published Jan 17, 2026
Rare snowfall is possible across the Southeast this weekend as Arctic air moves in.
South-central Georgia and the Carolinas have the best chance for measurable snow, with lighter chances extending into Florida and Virginia.
Even minor snow accumulation could impact travel; residents are advised to stay informed and limit driving.
Winter system brings rare snow chances
A developing winter weather system is bringing the possibility of rare snowfall to parts of the Southeast this weekend. While forecast confidence remains mixed, the chance of seeing snowflakes is increasing. Early computer models suggested a significant snow event, but more recent projections indicate that much of the storm's moisture may move out of the region before the coldest Arctic air arrives. However, forecasters anticipate a narrow window for rain to change to snow late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
