The Northeast is preparing for another bout of freezing temperatures as the polar vortex, influenced by a sudden stratospheric warming event, is set to impact the region. This phenomenon, which occurs when temperatures in the Arctic stratosphere rise rapidly, weakens the polar vortex, allowing frigid Arctic air to descend southward into North America. The National Weather Service forecasts that these icy conditions will persist throughout February.
