Climate adaptation tools reduce damage from weather
A recent report by McKinsey Global Institute has identified simple yet effective climate adaptation tools that can significantly reduce damage from extreme weather events. The study evaluated 20 tools, including fans and sea dikes, which have been used for centuries to mitigate climate impacts. Sea dikes and levees, for instance, are found to be 90% to 100% effective in reducing flood damages, with benefits outweighing costs by five to ten times. The report emphasizes the importance of investing in adaptation, especially in vulnerable regions, as the world currently spends $190 billion annually to protect 1.2 billion people from extreme weather. However, extending this protection to all 4.1 billion people exposed to climate hazards would require $540 billion annually.
