The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has implemented a software upgrade designed to mitigate delays caused by rain. Previously, trains had to slow down significantly during wet weather, leading to numerous delays. The new software allows trains to maintain speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, even on wet tracks, by incorporating 'pre-braking actions' that prevent wheel skidding. This upgrade has shown promising results, with a dramatic reduction in delays during rainy periods. Specifically, rain-related delays decreased from 11,903 in July-December 2024 to only 128 in the same period of 2025. The 'pre-braking actions' are crucial for maintaining speed without compromising safety, particularly important in the frequently rainy San Francisco Bay Area.
