Kansas has launched a new safety campaign targeting drivers in the western part of the state, where blowing dust and high winds frequently create hazardous conditions. This initiative follows a devastating dust storm in northwest Kansas in 2025 that led to a 70-car pileup, resulting in eight deaths and over 50 injuries. Dust storms are common in this region from December to April, intensified by the flat plains, open agricultural fields, and ongoing drought. Kansas Highway Patrol trooper Tod Hileman stresses the significant dangers posed by these storms, pointing out that visibility can drop dramatically, making driving extremely risky.
