Strong winds and low humidity prompt warning
The National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley has issued a Red Flag Warning for a significant portion of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa due to the combination of strong winds and critically low relative humidity. The warning is in effect from noon to 9 PM CDT today and again from 9 AM to 10 PM CDT on Saturday, covering numerous counties including Thurston, Boone, and Madison in Nebraska, and Harrison, Shelby, and Pottawattamie in Iowa. The expected south winds will range from 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph, while relative humidity levels could plummet to as low as 12 percent. These conditions create a high risk of rapid fire spread, prompting the cancellation of the previously issued Fire Weather Watch.
