Snow Drought Grips Nevada, West as Warm Winter Cuts Snowpack
US · Published Jan 16, 2026
Nevada and the Western US are experiencing a severe snow drought due to unusually warm winter temperatures.
The reduced snowpack threatens the ski industry, spring runoff, agriculture, wildlife, and Colorado River water supplies.
Climate change and altered weather patterns are contributing to the snow drought, impacting the region's environment and economy.
Unseasonably warm temperatures reduce snowpack this winter
A snow drought is currently gripping Nevada and the broader Western United States as unseasonably warm temperatures have drastically reduced the snowpack this winter. Snow typically functions as a natural water reservoir for the region, gradually releasing water during the spring thaw. However, as of January 1, the extent of snow cover was significantly below average, with only 379,000 acres covered across the West.
