Oahu floods after storms, evacuations in place
Oahu, Hawaii, is grappling with severe flooding after being hit by two powerful storms, leading to evacuation orders for Waialua and Haleiwa. The Wahiawa dam, which was already in poor condition based on a 2020 inspection, faces an imminent risk of failure. This dam, built in 1906 and owned by the Dole Food Company, is responsible for holding back irrigation water and forming Lake Wilson. The National Weather Service reports that northern Oahu has received between 8 and 12 inches of rain in the last 12 to 16 hours, resulting in widespread flooding.
