La Niña to Super El Niño Shift Ahead of Hurricane Season
US · Published Mar 22, 2026
NOAA has issued an El Niño Watch, predicting a strong El Niño with a chance of a Super El Niño by October.
El Niño typically reduces Atlantic hurricane activity, but warmer Atlantic waters could counteract this effect.
Forecasters warn that even in quieter seasons, a single major storm can cause significant damage; preparedness is key.
La Niña shifts to El Niño officially
The shift from La Niña to El Niño is officially underway, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issuing an El Niño Watch, indicating that conditions are expected to develop within the next few months. Current forecast models predict an 80–90% chance of a strong El Niño event, with a smaller but still significant possibility of a “Super El Niño” forming. This Super El Niño is anticipated to peak around October, coinciding with the height of the Atlantic hurricane season.
