Alert issued due to fine particle pollution
An unhealthy air quality alert has been issued for parts of Georgia, including Fitzgerald and Waycross, due to elevated levels of fine particle pollution (PM2.5). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that the air quality in these areas reached unhealthy levels on March 11, 2026. PM2.5 particles, which are 2.5 micrometers or less in size, can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, exacerbating health conditions like asthma and heart disease. The EPA's AirNow map indicates that everyone in the affected areas may experience adverse health effects, with sensitive groups, such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing heart or lung conditions, being particularly vulnerable.
