FEMA assesses Maui damage after Kona-low storms
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) teams have arrived in Maui to conduct formal damage assessments following two consecutive Kona-low storms that caused widespread destruction across the island chain. Preliminary estimates indicate at least $40 million in road damage, with residential impacts expected to reach tens of millions more. The storms have severely affected infrastructure, including health care facilities like Kula Hospital, which experienced water intrusion across multiple areas. Maui officials have received over 900 damage assessment submissions, with significant impacts reported in Kihei, where 80% to 90% of homes sustained damage. The storms have also led to flooding, power outages, and structural damage, prompting emergency responses and rescues. The county is transitioning from response to recovery, with community meetings planned to address specific needs.
