The final active human mission to Venus, Japan's Akatsuki spacecraft, has been declared dead by JAXA after losing contact in 2024. Launched in 2010, the probe overcame an engine failure and achieved orbit in 2015 using backup thrusters. Over nearly a decade, Akatsuki transformed understanding of Venus’ extreme climate and atmospheric “super rotation,” producing 178 scientific papers before its mission ended.
