US · Published Mar 22, 2026
Hawaii is experiencing its worst flooding in over 20 years, leading to mass evacuations.
The flooding is exacerbated by 'Kona lows' bringing heavy rainfall to saturated ground.
The National Weather Service warns of continued flooding risks despite some receding waters.
Hawaii faces worst flooding in two decades
Hawaii is currently facing its most severe flooding in over two decades, prompting immediate evacuation orders for residents in affected areas. This extreme weather event has been intensified by recent heavy rains falling on already saturated ground, following a winter storm system known as 'Kona lows'. These systems bring moisture-laden air from the south and southwest, resulting in intense rainfall. On Oahu's North Shore, known for its surfing, floodwaters have lifted homes and vehicles, leading to evacuation orders for approximately 5,500 people. The Wahiawa dam, a critical infrastructure, is under close watch due to its vulnerability and risk of failure.
