NOAA has issued a G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm watch for October 16–17, 2025, potentially bringing the Northern Lights to the U.S.
Optimal viewing locations include states from New York to Idaho, with peak activity expected between 4:00–7:00 p.m. EDT.
Escape light pollution, use aurora-tracking apps, and monitor the Bz index for the best viewing experience.
Northern Lights may be visible in U.S.
Get ready for a celestial show! A moderate (G2) geomagnetic storm watch has been issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for October 16–17, 2025. This follows a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that erupted from the Sun between October 11 and 13. These CMEs, which are essentially clouds of magnetized plasma, are predicted to reach Earth, potentially making the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, visible across several U.S. states.
