Statewide Red Flag Alert Issued in South Carolina Amid Wildfire Risks
US · Published Mar 25, 2026
A statewide Red Flag Alert has been issued in South Carolina due to increased wildfire risks.
The alert is caused by drought-like conditions, high winds, and low humidity, worsened by debris from Hurricane Helene.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and take extreme precautions if burning is necessary.
Increased wildfire risk due to dry conditions
The South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) has declared a statewide Red Flag Alert because of the increased risk of wildfires. This warning is a result of several factors, including little rainfall, strong winds, and low humidity, which have combined to produce drought-like conditions throughout the state. The problem is made worse by the large amounts of fuel left behind by Hurricane Helene, particularly in the western regions, where fallen trees and debris increase the likelihood of wildfires. These circumstances not only raise the possibility of fire starting but also make firefighting more difficult. Until further notice, the alert is in effect, and residents are urged to use caution when burning outside.
