Best meteor viewing opportunity this year
The Geminids meteor shower is set to peak in mid-December, providing one of the best opportunities this year to observe bright, fast-moving meteors against the clear winter skies. The peak viewing nights will be overnight from December 13 to 14. Unlike most meteor showers that originate from comets, the Geminids are unique because they come from debris shed by asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This results in the meteors having distinct, vivid, and fast streaks across the sky.
