Prolonged cold wave to persist for weeks
AccuWeather reports the severe winter of 2025–26 will maintain its grip on the Midwest and Northeast for several weeks. Temperatures are projected to remain 10–30°F below average into early February. Metropolitan areas like New York, Washington, and Philadelphia are experiencing lengthy subfreezing stretches, making this the most severe winter since 2017–18 for many locations. Cities including Minneapolis, Chicago, and Detroit have averaged more than 12–15°F below normal over recent weeks.
