The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued an air quality alert for specific regions in California due to elevated levels of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5. The alert, effective as of February 22, 2026, at 4:30 a.m. ET, highlights unhealthy air quality in areas including Portola, Cromberg, Sattley, the Sierra Valley, the Plumas National Forest, Mammoth Lakes, Mono Lake, Whitmore Hot Springs, and the Silver Divide. PM2.5 particles, less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, pose significant health risks as they can be inhaled deeply into the lungs and enter the bloodstream.
