Climate change intensified recent wildfires in Argentina and Chile, increasing the likelihood of hot, dry, and windy conditions.
The fires caused significant destruction and fatalities in Chile, while in Argentina, thousands were evacuated and vast areas of native forest were burned.
The study underscores the urgent need for global action to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and prevent future climate-related disasters.
Climate change fuels devastating wildfires in South America
Climate change has significantly intensified the recent devastating wildfires in Argentina and Chile, according to a new study by World Weather Attribution. The research indicates that the hot, dry, and windy conditions that fueled these fires were made substantially more likely due to human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, such conditions were up to 200% more likely in Chile and 150% more likely in Argentina.
