US · Published Mar 13, 2026
The polar vortex is back, bringing Arctic air to the Midwest and Northeast after a warm spell.
Snowstorms with blizzard conditions are forecast for the northern U.S., while the Southwest faces near-record heat.
Warmer air is expected by mid- to late next week, but another chill may return around March 23.
Arctic air brings cooler conditions and snow
The polar vortex has made a comeback in the eastern United States, ushering in a wave of Arctic air across the Midwest and Northeast. Following a period of unseasonably warm temperatures, with highs ranging from the 60s to 80s, residents are now experiencing cooler conditions in the 40s and 50s. Subzero lows are anticipated in areas such as North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin early next week.
