Dam failure threatens Oahu after severe flooding
Oahu, Hawaii is under threat as the Wahiawa dam faces imminent failure due to severe flooding from recent storms. Evacuation orders have been issued for Waialua and Haleiwa. The dam, built in 1906 and owned by the Dole Food Company, is currently overtopping, and its spillway may not be able to handle the floodwaters. The dam holds back Lake Wilson and was deemed in 'poor' condition during a 2020 inspection. Hawaii Governor Josh Green has closed state offices to allow families to focus on safety, as catastrophic flash flooding impacts parts of Oahu.
