SpaceX to launch NOAA's SWFO-L1 satellite to improve space weather forecasting.
The mission includes NASA’s IMAP and Carruthers Geocorona Observatory to study solar activity and Earth's magnetosphere.
SWFO-L1 aims to protect critical infrastructure by providing early warnings of geomagnetic disturbances, with full operations expected by spring 2026.
Space weather forecast ability to be enhanced
SpaceX is preparing to launch a groundbreaking mission to enhance our ability to forecast space weather. This mission includes NOAA’s first dedicated space weather satellite, known as the Space Weather Follow On-L1 (SWFO-L1), along with NASA’s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) and the Carruthers Geocorona Observatory. The primary goal is to improve the prediction of solar storms and understand their potential impacts on Earth.
