Don’t Blink! A Rare Northern Lights Show Might Steal the Sky
US · Published Nov 6, 2025
A strong geomagnetic storm could trigger vibrant Northern Lights visible across Canada, Alaska, northern Europe, and potentially the northern U.S.
The aurora display is due to a recent M7.4 solar flare and multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) interacting with Earth's magnetic field.
Optimal viewing locations are away from city lights with a clear northern horizon, a few hours before or after midnight.
Powerful solar activity may trigger aurora display
Aurora chasers, get ready! A potentially spectacular Northern Lights display may grace the skies tonight as powerful solar activity persists. After an unexpected G3 geomagnetic storm overnight, an even more potent surge from a recent M7.4 solar flare is predicted to impact Earth tonight and into Friday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) cautions that G3–G4 storm levels are possible, potentially bringing vibrant auroras visible far beyond the polar regions.
