Midwest faces red flag and high winds
The National Weather Service has issued red flag and high wind warnings throughout much of the Midwest, from the Canadian border to northern Texas, due to extremely dry weather. Strong winds are anticipated, particularly in southwest Kansas, the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles, where hard-red winter wheat is emerging. Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected. Central Kansas may experience gusts of 50 mph, while central South Dakota could see gusts as high as 65 mph. Relative humidity is predicted to drop as low as 8%, increasing the risk of wildfires. Residents are urged to take precautions against fires, such as avoiding outdoor burning and properly disposing of cigarettes.
