NASA data reveals San Francisco is sinking faster than previously estimated, potentially doubling sea-level rise by
The accelerated sinking, combined with rising sea levels, increases the risk of coastal erosion, flooding, and infrastructure damage in the Bay Area.
The findings emphasize the urgent need for accurate sea-level rise predictions and proactive climate change adaptation strategies to protect vulnerable coastal communities.
NASA reveals accelerated sinking in San Francisco
Recent NASA data indicates that San Francisco is sinking at a faster rate than earlier projections suggested. The study highlights that by 2050, relative sea levels in the city could be twice as high as previously estimated, primarily due to the combination of rising sea levels and vertical land motion, which refers to the sinking of land. The new research utilized satellite imagery from 2015 to 2023, revealing that past calculations, which relied on tide gauge data, underestimated the sinking rate. Similar underestimations have also been noted for Los Angeles, indicating a broader trend along the California coast.
