India's 2025 monsoon season shows uneven rainfall, with some areas getting too much rain and others not enough.
Crisil's Rainfall Distortion Index hits a 14-year high, showing the monsoon was strong but not evenly spread.
Excess rainfall may harm kharif crops but is expected to boost the rabi season through better irrigation.
Spatial imbalance in rainfall impacts agriculture sector
India's 2025 southwest monsoon season has been characterized by a significant spatial imbalance in rainfall, leading to varied outcomes for the agricultural sector, according to Crisil's recent analysis. The country recorded 108% of the long-period average (LPA) rainfall, similar to the previous year; however, the distribution was notably uneven. Excess rains were more widespread, affecting 58% of kharif-growing areas, compared to 42% in 2024.
