Rajasthan’s Water Paradox: 93 Dams Dry Despite Record Rain
IN · Published Sep 11, 2025
Despite record monsoon rainfall in Rajasthan, 93 out of 693 reservoirs remain empty, highlighting structural issues.
Encroachments and agriculture in catchment areas are blocking natural streams, preventing rainwater from reaching dams like Ramgarh Dam near Jaipur.
Experts emphasize the need to address siltation, blocked channels, and encroachment to safeguard Rajasthan's water future and ensure water security.
Rajasthan faces water paradox despite record rainfall
Rajasthan experienced its heaviest monsoon in over a century this year, recording 701.6 mm of rainfall between June and September, the highest in 108 years. Yet, despite the deluge, 93 out of 693 reservoirs remain empty. These include 27 major dams with a combined storage capacity of more than 4.25 million cubic metres and 66 smaller reservoirs.
